L'idea di dar vita al progetto 100 passi nasce nel 2007 durante un dibattito in programma per le commemorazioni dell'assassinio di Peppino Impastato, quando Danilo Sulis, l'amico di Peppino che lo aveva aiutato ad aprire Radio Aut, propose di riprendere il percorso interrotto con la riapertura della radio che avrebbe preso il nome di Radio 100 passi.
